American circa 1835-1860

The rich, luxurious qualities of damask fabrics had often served as a source for wallpaper patterns. This particular damask pattern is typical of damask wallpaper patterns in the mid-19th century, during the Rococo revival. In contrast to 18th century wallpaper damasks, which relied heavily on oriental motifs, a classical cornucopia forms the basis of the design for this striking Adelphi pattern. Another defining characteristic of the time period evident in this pattern is its smaller scale.
