American 1830s
Two
versions of the Rapp House Medallion pattern were used at the site of
the Harmonist Society in Ambridge, Pennsylvania in the late 1830s. The
first version featured an irisé – or “rainbow” – ground, shown in the
historic colorway, above. Developed in France, this technique involes
brushing multiple bands of varying colors to the paper and then, using
several wide brushes, blending the edges of the colors
together.
A very forceful, formal pattern this version was installed in the
parlor of the George Rapp, the Society’s founder’s home.
A
second colorway, which uses a standard one color ground, was chosen for
the sitting room of George Rapp’s son George's home, to much different
effect.
This pattern is
licensed to Adelphi Paper Hangings by the Old Economy
Village.
