Bixby Vine & Drapery

American, circa 1811-1817

This pattern is licensed to Adelphi Paper Hangings by Historic New England.

Description

The Bixby Vine and Drapery pattern is similar to patterns being printed by Moses Grant, Jr. during the same time period. Nevertheless, it is thought that the document of this pattern was probably not from the Grant factory but was a copy. Two examples are known to exist. One is found lining a hide covered trunk in the collection of Historic New England; the other was used in the sitting room of the Bixby House, now at Old Sturbridge Village.

While the design is simple, the popular harlequin format, bisecting and mirroring the pattern with strong light and dark colors, creates a surprising sense of volume.
