Gimp Border or Frieze

English, 1807

This pattern is licensed to Adelphi Paper Hangings by Historic New England.

Description

The format of this trim for the Net sidewall pattern is unusual. Customarily borders or friezes were designed to be used as either one or the other. Borders were printed with a block on which, depending on the width, 3 to 8 (or more) rows of the pattern were carved, all oriented in the same direction. In this case, the original printing blocks had only two rows of the pattern, flipped to create a mirror image with a wide space between the two, which allows it to be used full-width as a frieze. If used as a border, the rows would be trimmed just at the edge of the gimp.

Imperial Measurements: Repeat 7 ¼ inches, border, width 3 ¼, frieze , width 10 ⅛.

Metric Measurements: 18.4 cm, 8.3 cm, 25.7 cm.
