LeBaron Border

American, circa 1790s

This pattern is licensed to Adelphi Paper Hangings by Old Sturbridge Village.

Description

Along with Arabesque Pigeons and Garland Tassle Frieze patterns this border was found in the parlor of the Lazarus LeBaron House in Sutton, Massachusetts. As with other borders of the time period, it can be used to frame architectural elements such as doors and windows.

The reproduction of this border illustrates the subtle but significant decisions which present themselves when working with 18th century patterns. American printers of that time did not always concern themselves with complete accuracy; the registration of printing blocks on the original was in some areas rather haphazard. At Adelphi we analyze each color element to determine if discrepancies are due to a fault in the design or of the printer. In this case it was decided the pattern was drawn correctly but simply not printed well.
