Peony Frieze

French, circa 1830s

This pattern is licensed to Adelphi Paper Hangings by the Ladies Hermitage Association.

Description

This striking frieze comes from the “Boy’s Room” of The Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson and his wife Sarah. The unusual juxtaposition of blue/green floral elements floating over a deep earth red are indicative of the French Empire style found throughout this Nashville landmark. Unlike the Lion Frieze, also from the Hermitage, no manufacturer’s mark was found. The only identifying mark, “750”, cannot be traced to any known manufacturer of the time.

Imperial Measurements: Repeat 19 inches, height 9 inches

Metric Measurements: 48.3 cm, 22.9 cm.
