Strawberry Hill Plaid

English, circa 1750

This pattern is licensed to Adelphi Paper Hangings by The Strawberry Hill Trust.

Description

This pattern was discovered in 2007 in the so-called “Plaid Bedchamber” of Horace Walpole’s Strawberry Hill, near London – although the room was never actually used as a bed chamber! Nevertheless it is an appropriate pattern for a secondary room, such as a bedroom.

In order to maintain the very tight detail of the original wallpaper we followed the lead of the 18th century manufacturers and used thin, transparent paints to print all the colorways, rather than our standard opaque distempers. As was the case for the 18th century printers, there are occasions where the paint floods joining several of the dots or squares together. This is simply a mark of the hand made process.

Imperial Measurements: Repeat 21 inches, width 21 ⅛ inches, length 11 yards, straight match.

Metric Measurements: 53.3 cm, 53.7 cm, 10 m.
