Trophies

English, circa 1770-1785

This pattern is licensed to Adelphi Paper Hangings by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

Description

This pattern is replete with juxtapositions. Not only do groupings of the tools of war – a shield, sword, flag and a quiver with arrows alternate with gatherings of flowers and foliage but the two muscular scaled and barbed stripes have to contend with a delicate shifting line of bell shapes. It is this last motif which frames and adds variation to the structure.

While our reproduction is based on an original document at Colonial Williamsburg, a fragment of the same pattern is part of the Historic New England collection. That piece was chosen for a house in Wells, Maine, where it was installed in “best” chamber.

Imperial Measurements: Repeat 21 inches, width 21 ½ inches, length 11 yards, straight match.

Metric Measurements: 53.3 cm, 54.6 cm, 10 m.
